What Is a Bong?

The word bong comes from the Thai word baung, meaning wooden tube. Originally simple bamboo pipes, modern bongs are now crafted from glass, silicone, or other materials.

A bong typically consists of:

  • A cylindrical neck
  • A water-filled base
  • A mouthpiece
  • A bowl
  • A downstem

Bongs are mainly used for smoking marijuana (cannabis), delivering flavorful hits while filtering out up to 95% of harmful particulates. This results in an efficient, enjoyable smoking experience and a faster high.

Do Bongs Get You Higher?

Bongs tend to get people higher than joints or other smoking methods.

The water inside the bong plays a crucial role in cooling and filtering the smoke, thereby removing the harsh, dry heat and irritants.

This results in a much smoother inhalation, enabling users to breathe in more deeply with less coughing.

Consequently, more THC-rich smoke reaches the lungs, covering a greater surface area and enhancing the overall effect. In addition to these physical benefits, most bongs are made of transparent glass, enabling you to observe the mesmerising interplay of smoke and water within.

This visual element can be both aesthetically pleasing and stimulating, enhancing the overall experience. Some bongs are designed to be artistic and eye-catching, adding a fun, personal touch that makes using them more enjoyable.

What’s the Best Type of Bong for You?

1. Beaker Bongs

Beaker bongs are characterised by their wide base, which makes them more stable and less likely to tip over. Their larger water chambers allow for better cooling and filtration of the smoke, resulting in a gentler hit that causes less irritation to the throat.

2. Straight Tube Bongs

A straight tube bong has a vertical look, where the joint for the bowl or slide often sits flat or level with the base of the bong.

Because the smoke travels in a straight line with minimal resistance, these bongs hit hard and clear fast, making them perfect for people who want strong, immediate rips.

3. Gravity Bongs

A gravity bong, also known as a GB, Grav, water pipe, or bucket bong, uses water and gravity to fill a bottle or chamber with a large amount of smoke that can be inhaled.

As gravity fills the chamber with smoke, it creates less work for the smoker's lungs.

It provides strong hits that can get you very high instantly.

4. Recycler Bongs

Recycler bongs are designed for advanced water filtration, providing condensed chambers and drag-free smoke.

Recyclers typically comprise two connected chambers via intake and drain tubes.

The first chamber your smoke enters contains your pipe's primary percolator.

This filters the smoke and pulls it, along with the water, into the second chamber via the intake tube.

The second chamber is usually conical, forcing the water to spin in a whirlpool fashion and allowing you to take large hits without any splash-back.

5. Percolator Bongs

Percolator bongs, often referred to as 'percs', are specially designed water pipes.

Percolation is the process of filtering fluid through a porous material.

In a bong, this means breaking the smoke into smaller bubbles, which increases its surface area and extends the path that the smoke takes before it reaches your lungs. The result is a cleaner, cooler, smoother hit.

Percolators come in a wide variety of styles and designs, such as tree percs and honeycomb percs. Each type offers unique airflow and filtration characteristics.

Some bongs with percolators even include multiple percolators, providing double or triple filtration — ideal for those who value purity, flavour, and smoothness in every hit.

How Much Water Should You Use?

Proper water level is key:

  • Too much water makes inhaling difficult and risks water splashing.
  • Too little water results in harsh, hot hits.

Aim to fully submerge the downstem slits, or about half an inch of the downstem if it has no slits. Adjust to your preference by trial and error—more water for cooler, chuggier hits; less water for faster, stronger rips.

How to Clean Your Bong: Simple & Effective

A clean bong ensures smooth flavor and prevents bacteria buildup. Here’s the best way to clean your bong using household items:

Step 1: Empty dirty water and rinse with warm water.

Step 2: Take apart your bong by removing all detachable parts, such as the bowl and downstem, and placing small parts in a resealable plastic bag.

Step 3: Pour isopropyl alcohol (70%+) or substitute it with vodka and vinegar into the bong and bag. Add a few tablespoons of coarse salt, such as Epsom salt or rock salt, to act as a natural abrasive.

Step 4: Cover the bong's openings with your hands, cloth, or bong caps. Shake the bong vigorously for a few minutes, allowing the coarse salt or baking soda to scrub away the residue inside. Repeat this process if necessary for stubborn buildup.

Step 5: Use the same alcohol and salt solution in the resealable plastic bag with the bowl and downstem. Shake the bag carefully or let it soak for 30 minutes. You can use cotton swabs or pipe cleaners to remove any stuck resin.

Step 6: Rinse all parts thoroughly with warm water.

Step 7: Air dry completely or use paper towels before reassembling.
